How many will you need?
Work out your area in square metres, then add 10% for cuts and breakages:
- Cobbles (100×100mm): around 80–85 per m². A 12m² garden path needs roughly 1,100 cobbles including waste.
- Setts (200×100mm): around 50 per m². A 30m² driveway needs roughly 1,650 setts including waste.
How to lay Raj Green cobbles
Cobbles are laid on the same principle as slabs, over a compacted sub-base:
- Sub-base: excavate and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base — at least 150mm for paths and edging, 200–250mm for any area taking vehicles.
- Mortar bed: lay each cobble on a full mortar bed (a 4:1 to 6:1 sand-to-cement mix), not spot-bedded, so there are no voids beneath.
- Priming: brush a slurry primer onto the back of each piece and bed it wet-to-wet for a lasting bond.
- Jointing: fill the 10–12mm joints once the bed has set.
- Curing: allow 48 hours before foot traffic, at least 7 days before any vehicle use, and 28 days for full cure.
Lay from a mix of packs, not one at a time. Raj Green's whole appeal is its natural colour variation — so pull cobbles from several open packs as you go and blend them across the area. Working straight through one pack at a time can leave patches of one tone next to another instead of an even, mellow blend.
