Driveway Paving Tiles/Slabs
Built to Take the Weight
Not every paving material can handle a driveway. Cars, vans, turning forces, point loads — your driveway needs stone that's genuinely rated for vehicle traffic. Here's what works, what doesn't, and what we stock.
Paving tiles rated for driveways
A driveway needs denser, harder, or thicker paving than a patio. The material must withstand vehicle weight, turning forces on the front wheels, and years of point loads from parked cars. These three products handle it.
Porcelain Paving
20mm porcelain rated for vehicular use when installed on the correct sub-base. Non-porous, frost-proof, stain-proof, and colourfast. The contemporary alternative.
Sandstone Cobbles & Setts
40–50mm thick natural sandstone in 100×100mm cobbles and 200×100mm setts. Compact units that handle vehicle loads — unlike standard sandstone paving slabs. Kandla Grey and Raj Green.
Granite Paving
The hardest natural stone available for paving. Flamed surface for anti-slip grip, extremely low porosity, and a 50+ year lifespan. The traditional choice for premium driveways.
A note on sandstone: slabs vs setts
Sandstone paving slabs (600×600, 900×600) are not suitable for driveways. They're 20–22mm thick sedimentary stone that can crack under the concentrated weight of car tyres, especially at turning points. Sandstone slabs are excellent for patios, paths, and garden paving — but driveways need something different.
Sandstone cobbles and setts (100×100, 200×100) are a different product entirely. At 40–50mm thick and with a much smaller surface area, they distribute vehicle loads effectively and have been used on driveways and roads for centuries. If you want natural sandstone character on your driveway, cobbles and setts are the way to do it.
Limestone paving slabs are also too soft for most driveway applications — the same thickness limitation applies.
We sell sandstone slabs, limestone, cobbles and setts — but we'll always steer you to the right product for the right application.

Driveway installation requirements
Driveway paving requires a more substantial sub-base than garden paving. The key differences:
Deeper sub-base
Minimum 200mm of compacted MOT Type 1 for domestic cars. 250–300mm for heavier vehicles or clay soil. This is non-negotiable — an inadequate sub-base will fail under vehicle weight.
Full mortar bed
Every slab must sit on a full mortar bed — never spot-bedded. Driveways with spot-bedded slabs crack within months as the unsupported stone flexes under tyre loads.
Professional installation
We recommend professional installation for driveways. The sub-base depth, drainage requirements, and load calculations are critical. A poorly laid driveway is expensive to fix.
