How many will you need?
Work out your area in square metres, then add 10% for cuts and breakages:
- Cobbles (100×100mm): around 80–85 per m². A 12m² garden path needs roughly 1,100 cobbles including waste.
- Setts (200×100mm): around 50 per m². A 30m² driveway needs roughly 1,650 setts including waste.
How to lay Fossil Mint cobbles and setts
They're laid on the same principle as slabs, over a compacted sub-base — with driveways needing a deeper, stronger base:
- Sub-base: excavate and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base — at least 150mm for paths and edging, 200–250mm for driveways carrying vehicles.
- Mortar bed: lay each piece on a full mortar bed (a 4:1 to 6:1 sand-to-cement mix), not spot-bedded, so there are no voids beneath.
- Priming: brush a slurry primer onto the back of each piece and bed it wet-to-wet for a lasting bond.
- Jointing: fill the 10–12mm joints once the bed has set.
- Curing: allow 48 hours before foot traffic, at least 7 days before any vehicle use, and 28 days for full cure.
Seal light stone sooner rather than later. Because Fossil Mint is pale, marks and organic staining show more than on darker stone. A breathable sealer applied after laying — and topped up every few years — keeps the light tone clean, particularly on paths under trees or in damp, shaded spots.
