How many will you need?
Work out your area in square metres, then add 10% for cuts and breakages:
- Setts (200×100mm): around 50 per m². A 30m² driveway needs roughly 1,650 setts including waste.
- Cobbles (100×100mm): around 80–85 per m². A 12m² path needs roughly 1,100 cobbles including waste.
How to lay Kandla Grey setts
Setts and cobbles are laid on the same principle as slabs, but driveways need a deeper, stronger base because of the vehicle load:
- Sub-base: excavate and compact a MOT Type 1 sub-base — at least 150mm for paths, 200–250mm for driveways carrying vehicles.
- Mortar bed: lay each sett on a full mortar bed (a 4:1 to 6:1 sand-to-cement mix), not spot-bedded, so there are no voids under the stone.
- Priming: brush a slurry primer onto the back of each piece and bed it wet-to-wet for a lasting bond.
- Jointing: fill the 10–12mm joints once the bed has set.
- Curing: allow 48 hours before foot traffic, at least 7 days before driving on it, and 28 days for the mortar to fully cure.
On a driveway, the base is everything. Setts themselves are more than strong enough for vehicles — failures almost always come from too shallow or poorly compacted a sub-base. Go to 200–250mm of well-compacted MOT Type 1, and use a full mortar bed rather than spot-bedding. For larger driveways or complex patterns, an experienced installer is well worth it.
