Indian sandstone cobbles and setts bring authentic natural stone character to driveways, garden paths, and patio edging with hand-cut texture and traditional cobbled appeal. Calibrated to 40-50mm thickness, these natural stone pieces deliver genuine slip resistance, frost tolerance, and weathered charm that improves with age.
At Universal Paving, our range covers two essential formats: 100x100mm cobbles (approximately 80-85 pieces per m²) for intricate patterns and curved paths, and 200x100mm setts (approximately 50 pieces per m²) for driveways and straight runs. Available in Kandla Grey's cool architectural tones and Raj Green's warm multi-colour palette, both in handcut (crisp edges) and tumbled (aged appearance) finishes. Pricing starts from £40/m² with free UK mainland delivery.

Decision guide: Choose 100x100mm cobbles for curves, patterns, and traditional cottage gardens. Choose 200x100mm setts for driveways, modern properties, and larger areas.
Handcut Finish (£40-43/m²)
Hand-chiselled edges with crisp corners and natural riven top surface. Creates formal aesthetic with sharp definition between pieces. Best for period properties, driveways requiring precise patterns, and projects where clean edges matter. Looks newly laid with distinct joints and structured character.
Tumbled Finish (£40-43/m²)
Mechanically tumbled to soften edges and create aged appearance with rounded corners. Looks established from day one with organic, weathered aesthetic. Best for restoration projects, cottage gardens, and informal garden paths. Appears as if it's been there for decades.
Both finishes perform identically. This is purely aesthetic choice.

What's the difference between cobbles and setts?
Cobbles are 100x100mm format (smaller, approximately 80-85 pieces per m²) best for intricate patterns and curved paths. Setts are 200x100mm format (larger, approximately 50 pieces per m²) best for driveways and straight runs. Both are 40-50mm thick and suitable for outdoor use.
Can I use sandstone cobbles on a driveway?
Yes. When properly installed on 150mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base with full mortar bed (40-50mm), sandstone cobbles and setts handle vehicular traffic. The 200x100mm setts are more commonly used for driveways due to faster installation.
Do sandstone cobbles need sealing?
Sealing is recommended for driveways to enhance colour depth and provide stain protection. Re-seal every 3-5 years. Not essential for garden paths or patio edging.
How long does installation take?
Professional installers typically complete 10-15m² per day for cobbles and setts. DIY installation takes longer.
What's better: handcut or tumbled finish?
Both perform identically. Handcut has crisp edges and looks newly laid (best for driveways). Tumbled has rounded edges and looks aged (best for cottage gardens). Choose based on aesthetic preference.
Can I drive on sandstone cobbles immediately after installation?
No. Allow 48 hours minimum before light foot traffic, 7 days before vehicular traffic. Full mortar cure takes 28 days.
Do I need a professional installer?
Recommended for driveways, complex patterns, and large areas (20m²+). DIY is reasonable for small garden paths under 10m² if you have paving experience.
Will cobbles work on a sloped driveway?
Yes. Cobbles and setts actually work better than large slabs on slopes because each piece can be individually leveled. Maximum recommended slope: 1:10 (10% gradient).
How much does a typical driveway project cost?
For 30m² driveway using Kandla Grey 200x100mm setts: Materials £1,200 + Sub-base £300 + Installation £1,050-1,350 = Total £2,550-2,850 including labour.
Do you deliver across the UK?
Yes. Free UK mainland delivery on all cobbles and setts orders. Delivery within 3-5 working days to kerbside via tail-lift lorry.
