DESCRIPTION
Right, so instead of buying all identical 900×600mm slabs, the mix pack gives you multiple sizes to play with. Creates that more organic, less regimented look - you know, the "random pattern" paving that looks like it's been there forever rather than laid last Tuesday. More work to install (someone's got to figure out the pattern), but the end result feels more natural and interesting.
What's in the Mix
Typically includes three or four different slab sizes - something like 900×600mm, 600×600mm, 600×290mm, and 290×290mm (though exact sizes vary by supplier). All in that classic Kandla Grey colour - the soft mid-grey with blue-grey undertones that's been gracing British gardens for years.
Because you're getting multiple sizes, you've got design options. Can create proper random patterns where no two areas look the same, or work to established laying patterns like opus romano. Adds visual interest and breaks up what might otherwise feel like endless identical slabs.
Each piece is natural stone, so you get all the usual variation - different tones, natural markings, texture differences. Combined with the mixed sizes, means your patio's genuinely unique. Nobody else will have exactly the same layout or appearance.
The Pattern Question
Here's the thing with mix packs - someone needs to figure out how the pieces fit together. If you're DIYing, that's you spending time working out arrangements that look balanced and natural. If you're paying someone, that's extra labour time.
Some people love the puzzle aspect. Others find it frustrating and wish they'd just bought uniform sizes. Worth thinking about honestly before committing - how do you feel about spending hours arranging stones?
The payoff is a more interesting, organic-looking result. Standard grid patterns are fine but can feel a bit... predictable. Random patterns have that timeless, established quality that's harder to achieve with uniform tiles.
Natural Stone Behaviour
Same sandstone as the standard Kandla Grey, so same characteristics:
- Porous natural stone that needs sealing
- Ages and weathers over time (character or concern, depending on perspective)
- Can stain if spills aren't dealt with promptly
- More maintenance than porcelain but brings authentic stone character
- Robust and weather-resistant but softer than manufactured materials
The riven texture provides grip and hides minor marks well. Multiple sizes actually help disguise any slight colour variation between batches too - it just reads as intentional pattern variety.
Maintenance Reality
Identical to standard Kandla Grey really - sealing recommended, careful cleaning, prompt spill management. The mixed sizes don't change the stone's properties, just how it looks laid.
If anything, the random pattern might make maintenance slightly easier because your eye doesn't fixate on individual slabs - imperfections or slight colour shifts just blend into the overall varied appearance.
Still needs more care than porcelain. Still ages and develops patina. If you're not up for that, mixed sizes won't change the fundamental stone behaviour.
Where Mix Packs Shine
Particularly good for:
- Larger patio areas where uniform slabs might feel monotonous
- Traditional or cottage gardens wanting that established look
- Curved or irregular spaces where mixed sizes offer flexibility
- Projects where visual interest trumps quick installation
- Gardens with existing random-pattern paving you're extending

We strongly advise adding at least 10% extra to cover cuts, wastage, or damages. This also ensures you have matching slabs from the same batch as spares or for contingency.
Each pallet can weigh up to 1,000kg. We advise using proper great and safety equipment for unloading the slabs. Slabs weighing 20 kgs or more should be lifted by two people.
