DESCRIPTION
Now we're getting into the classic brick-sized paving format. 600×300mm is that traditional dimension that unlocks all sorts of pattern possibilities - herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave, you name it. Still the same Kandla Grey everyone loves, just in a size that gives you serious design flexibility if patterns are your thing.
Why This Size Is Different
The 600×300mm format (roughly 2:1 ratio) is what makes classic paving patterns possible. You can't do proper herringbone with square tiles, and larger rectangular slabs don't create the same detailed pattern effect. This size hits that sweet spot for traditional laying patterns.
Practical advantages too:
- Lighter and easier to handle than larger formats
- Good for paths and narrower spaces where big slabs feel wrong
- Easier cutting and adjustment when needed
- Works brilliantly for curved edges (smaller units follow curves better)
- Single-person handling without destroying your back
The pattern options are genuinely appealing if you're into that sort of thing. Stretcher bond (like brickwork) looks smart and structured. Herringbone creates visual interest and directionality. Basketweave adds traditional charm. Or just random bond for something more organic.
The Stone Character
Still that classic Kandla Grey - soft mid-grey with blue-grey undertones, natural variation, riven texture. All the usual natural stone characteristics in a different format.
Each piece is unique because it's actual sandstone. Different tones, natural markings, texture variations. When laid in patterns, this variation adds to the overall character rather than fighting against it - imperfections become part of the charm.
The neutral colour remains endlessly versatile. Traditional or modern gardens, formal or relaxed layouts - it adapts. That's why it's been popular for decades.
Pattern Considerations
Here's the thing about patterned laying - it takes longer and requires more skill than simple grid patterns. If you're paying someone, expect higher labour costs. If you're DIYing, factor in significantly more time and planning.
Herringbone particularly is fiddly. Looks fantastic when done well, but getting the angles right and maintaining straight lines requires patience and precision. Stretcher bond is simpler but still needs careful alignment.
More cutting required too, especially at edges and around obstacles. More waste. More time spent measuring and checking.
But the visual payoff? Genuinely worth it for many people. Patterned paving has character and craft that simple grids lack.
Natural Stone Behaviour
Same as all Kandla Grey sandstone:
- Porous natural stone needing sealing
- Ages and weathers over time (character or concern, your call)
- Requires prompt attention to spills
- More maintenance than porcelain but brings authenticity
- Robust but softer than manufactured materials
- Riven texture provides grip and hides marks
The smaller size doesn't change stone properties, just how you lay it and what patterns you can create.
Maintenance Reality
More grout lines with smaller units means slightly more surface to keep clean. But we're talking minimal difference in practice - still just sweeping regularly and occasional washing.
The patterned layouts actually help disguise any slight colour variation between batches. Your eye reads the overall pattern rather than fixating on individual slabs, so minor imperfections blend in.
Still requires sealing, careful cleaning, natural stone care. If that sounds like too much work, porcelain remains the lower-maintenance option regardless of size.
Where 600×300mm Shines
Particularly good for:
- Garden paths where the size feels proportionate
- Driveways wanting traditional herringbone patterns
- Formal gardens where structured patterns suit the style
- Victorian or period properties where traditional paving fits
- Anyone who loves the craft and detail of patterned laying
- Smaller projects where large slabs would overwhelm
